Welcome to Sugarloaf Cabins

The area is primarily residential with a convenience store and a bar located at the center of the community. The residential area is set at an elevation of 7,096 feet at its center, whereas its extreme northern border is 6,998 feet above sea level and the southern tip sits at 7,218 feet above sea level. There is no municipal organization for the area, and all fire, water, and police service is provided by San Bernardino County. Big Bear High School is located in the northern part of the community. The name of the town is taken from the nearby mountain, Sugarloaf. The mountain is so called because it appeared to some to bear a resemeblence to a sugarloaf. (In settlement days sugar was sold in pieces of a loaf).

Sugarloaf Attractions and Activities

Some of the Sugarloaf attractions are:

Bertha Peak (San Bernardino National Forest near Big Bear Lake): An easy and popular three-mile trail, Bertha Peak follows a fairly level path to mountaintop views of Big Bear Lake and the San Gorgonio Wilderness.

Mount San Gorgonio: Mount San Gorgonio encompasses 58,969 acres of trails, lakes, meadows, streams, mountain slopes, and forests.

Big Falls: An easy one-mile hike, Big Falls Trail ends at the famous cascades, which plunge down the canyon into Mill Creek.

Serenity Place (Big Bear City, California (0.3 miles from Sugarloaf)).

Moonridge Zoo (Big Bear Lake, California (2.3 miles from Sugarloaf)): It's not an ordinary zoo; its primary function is a permanent home for animals that could not otherwise survive in the wild. There's some great animals here - bears, buffaloes, a snow leopard, and bald eagles - as well as pretty everyday animals like raccoons, skunks, foxes, deer, crows, etc. The neatest thing about this zoo is the tours they give at feeding time. A zookeeper walks the group through the zoo while talking about the animals s/he is feeding and a bit about their diet. It was really interesting and enjoyable to watch the animals interact with their keepers. It's free with admission.

Bear Mountain Ski Resort (Big Bear Lake, California (2.3 miles from Sugarloaf)): Big Bear Mountain Ski & Golf Resort is a 9-hole regulation length golf course in Big Bear Lake, California. This short layout has 3 sets of teeboxes for a fun, but challenging golfing experience. Online tee times may be available at Big Bear Mountain Ski & Golf Resort or at nearby golf courses, usually offered at a discount from the normal rate.

Alpine Trout Lakes (Big Bear Lake, California (2.5 miles from Sugarloaf)): Alpine Trout Lakes is to fishing what the California Roll is to sushi. It is, but it isn't. Located just off the main drag through town, this is an easy excursion well-suited for families with young kids or anyone looking for a summertime activity in Big Bear other than the Bowling Barn. Like the California Roll, this place provides a safe, low commitment introduction to fishing. They provide everything you need and will even clean and store your catch for you (for a fee, of course). This place is pretty good for a child's first fishing experience.

Moonridge Zoo Gift Shop (Big Bear City, California (2.0 miles from Sugarloaf)).

Super Bear Arcade (Big Bear Lake, California (4.0 miles from Sugarloaf)): You can get to this joint and on the outside it reads "Super Bear Arcade, Home of The 25 cent Skee Ball since 1959". On the inside what to behold and arcade thats covered in pure gold, well not really. This place has all the classics that you can ever think of or have played and yes for only 25 cents. A lot of of the games were down and out of service but, if you are a true classic coin-op enthusiast this place is like a video game hall of fame museum. All the old games you remember, a walk down memory lane...the only problem is that these are probably those exact games you played 30 years ago. This would be a really cool place if at least 60% of the games worked; and they mopped the floors.

Old Bear Valley Dam (Big Bear Lake, California (4.0 miles from Sugarloaf)): The first Bear Valley Dam was constructed in 1884 at a cost of $75,000. It was built to create a reservoir for downstream irrigation uses in Redlands.
