San Jacinto is a city in Riverside County, California, U.S.A. It was named after Saint Hyacinth and is located at the north end of the San Jacinto Valley, with Hemet to its south. The mountains associated with the valley are the San Jacinto Mountains. The city is renowned for its giant, white, "S", painted above the town on North Mountain, which faithful valley boosters light up for the San Jacinto High School annual homecoming football game. Mount San Jacinto College, a junior community college, has served the Inland Empire region for over forty years. The local ballpark is home to the semi-pro collegiate team, the Sou-Cal Tremors. San Jacinto also is home to the Soboba Casino, a gaming casino owned and operated by the Soboba Band of Luiseno Mission Indians.
San Jacinto is the oldest incorporated city in Riverside county. The name, San Jacinto, came from Juan Bautista de Anza who came to the valley in 1774 and began his rancho named for St. Hyacinth, or Jacinto, in Spanish. The San Jacinto Rancho was a gigantic Spanish grant which extended from the mountains to Corona. The grant from the Mexican government was to the Don Jose Antonio Estudillo family in 1842. This family remained basically alone in the valley for many years. When others finally starting moving to the area, he sold off portions of his holdings, eventually deciding to begin a town. In 1868, the first school was built. In 1884, the first newspaper in the county, the San Jacinto Register, began to publish issues. In 1888, San Jacinto was incorporated.
